10 Things to do in Manchester This Summer

Living in the heart of the city at MeadowSide means that there is always something going on just outside your door. This Summer has marked the easing of restrictions and the city springing back to life, beginning with the Manchester Flower Show and MIF (Manchester International Festival). With the school holidays just beginning, there is plenty of time to explore everything Manchester has to offer this Summer.

  1. Clear your head and get Summer off to a relaxing start

Begin the Summer holidays feeling relaxed and energised from our Mindfulness in the Meadow sessions with the lovely Sarah Jupp. This month’s class will be held on Saturday 31st July, 11:30-12:30 and will be our last, so make sure you don’t miss out! The class is an hour long, with an introduction to mindfulness, gentle stretching and mindful walking and breathing practice. Sign up here and see more of Sarah’s Yoga and Mindfulness classes here.

  1. Keep the relaxation going all Summer long

If you’ve been loving our mindfulness sessions so far, why not try out our free monthly Yoga in the Meadow sessions? Join us on the last Friday of every month, 8-8.45am for an invigorating session, which is welcome to beginners and Yogi’s alike – just bring yourself and a mat and start your day off right! Sign up here and see more Yoga classes from Kate Tittley here.

  1. Give back to the community

At MeadowSide, we’re lucky enough to have the city centre’s largest green space on our doorstep, and its important that we look after the space and keep it tidy. Every Thursday this Summer, join FEC’s partner charity, Moodswings to tend to their ‘Every Cloud has a Silver Lining’ garden in Angel Meadow Park. Moodswings do amazing work to help people recover from mood problems, and gardening has been known to decrease stress and be beneficial on mental health. Joining Moodswings’ gardening group is also great way to give back to the community and meet new people. Get in touch with Moodswings to find out more!

  1. Follow Alice into Wonderland

This is an important date that you don’t want to be late for! For fun for all the family, Manchester’s newest garden attraction, the RHS Bridgewater, is transforming into Wonderland, as re-imagined by illustrator Chris Riddell. Follow Alice down the rabbit hole and explore the gardens through her eyes, meeting your favourite characters and enjoying performances and craft workshops. Book your tickets and head to Wonderland here.

  1. Take Pride in your Summer plans

This Summer, Manchester’s biggest celebration is back! Having skipped last years celebrations due to lockdown, the cities Pride celebrations are back and bigger than ever. This year will see the introduction of smaller scale parades throughout the day and a fun-filled bank holiday weekend of campaigning, celebrating and fundraising for LGBTQ+ life in Greater Manchester. Find out how you can support Manchester Pride or purchase your tickets here.

  1. Bring your pup along too

We know that dogs are part of the family, which is why all of our apartments at MeadowSide are pet-friendly. We also know how much fun dressing up your pups in adorable outfits is! Which is why we are kicking off Manchester’s Pride weekend celebrations with our next Ex-Paw event, the Pooches of Pride dog show! Join us after work on Thursday 26th August for an evening with Manchester’s most fashionable pooches and take the opportunity to shop amazing local dog businesses and sample some of the best street food Manchester has to offer. RSVP to our Pooches of Pride dog show here and visit the Ex-Paw website here.

  1. Immerse yourself in the theatre

Now that lockdown is easing, its important to show our support for Manchester’s diverse and talented arts and culture industry. Along with their scheduled shows such as the Wiz and Rent later on this year, Hope Mill Theatre are taking over the space next to New Islington tram stop to bring us three weeks of theatre performances, comedy acts and live music to re-introduce the city to live entertainment and support the sector. Hope Fest will run from 16th July – 8th August, find out more here.

  1. Explore your neighbourhood

Manchester has a deep-rooted history, being at the forefront of the industrial revolution and the home of numerous famous characters, political movements and musical legends. Join a historical walking tour this Summer and uncover the hidden secrets of the city, such as the dark history of Angel Meadow as told by Friends of Angel Meadow or try out Free Manchester walking tours, meeting at the Alan Turing memorial in Sackville Gardens.

  1. Enjoy Manchester’s best street food offerings

If you love street food as much as we do, then you should definitely pay a visit to our neighbours at Grub! Grub is just a short walk from MeadowSide and showcases amazing local street food traders, from established names to up and coming traders. They also offer regular themed nights and plant-powered Sundays, featuring vegan takes on your favourite street food, so there’s definitely something for everyone to enjoy!

  1. Try out local craft beers

When it comes to heading out for drinks, there’s a huge variety of choice just right outside our doorstep at MeadowSide. We’re surrounded by Manchester’s best indie breweries, with the likes of Beatnikz Republic, Runaway Brewery & Blackjack Brewery just a few minutes walk away. If gin is more your thing, Manchester’s first ever gin distillery is just around the corner, offering tours and perfect serve gin and tonics using their small batch Three Rivers gin. If all this isn’t enough, we also have some of Manchester’s historic and most loved pubs, The Marble Arch and The Angel in our neighbourhood, serving up brewery-fresh cask beer and hearty pub food.
